Job Description
Join Southend-on-Sea City Council as a vital part of our community safety team. We are seeking dedicated and vigilant individuals to serve as Crossing Patrol Officers, affectionately known as ‘Lollipop People’. In this crucial role, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe passage of children and pedestrians across designated roads, particularly during school pick-up and drop-off times. This is a rewarding opportunity to contribute directly to the well-being and safety of our youngest residents, fostering a sense of security and community spirit.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely guide children and other pedestrians across designated road crossings, especially during peak school travel times.
- Operate and display the 'stop' sign prominently to stop traffic effectively and clearly.
- Maintain a visible and reassuring presence at your assigned crossing point.
- Communicate clearly and politely with children, parents, drivers, and members of the public.
- Report any safety concerns or incidents to the appropriate council department.
- Adhere to all council policies and procedures regarding road safety and public interaction.
- Be aware of and adapt to changing weather conditions, maintaining safety at all times.
Required Skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially with children.
- Strong sense of responsibility and reliability.
- Ability to work independently and make quick, sound judgments.
- Good physical fitness for standing for extended periods and in various weather conditions.
- Patience, approachable demeanor, and a friendly attitude.
- A commitment to child safety and community welfare.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working with children or in a public-facing role.
- Knowledge of local road networks and school areas in Southend-on-Sea.
- Basic first aid certification is a plus, but not required.
