Job Description

We are seeking an inspirational and visionary Choral Director to lead our thriving choral ensembles. The Choral Director will be responsible for the artistic and administrative oversight of all choral activities, including selecting repertoire, conducting rehearsals, preparing for and conducting performances, and fostering the musical development of our singers. This full-time position requires a passionate leader with a deep understanding of vocal pedagogy, choral literature, and community engagement. The successful candidate will contribute significantly to the artistic direction of the Richey Community Orchestra, working closely with the Artistic Director and administrative team to ensure high-quality musical experiences for both performers and audiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, select, and prepare a diverse and engaging repertoire for all choral performances.
  • Lead and conduct regular rehearsals, ensuring high standards of musicality, technique, and expression.
  • Audition, recruit, and retain choir members, fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • Develop and implement vocal warm-ups, exercises, and techniques to improve vocal health and performance.
  • Collaborate with the Artistic Director and guest conductors on integrated orchestral and choral programming.
  • Manage the choral budget, including music purchases, guest artists, and operational expenses.
  • Oversee logistics for performances, including venue setup, sound checks, and stage management.
  • Engage with the community through educational workshops, outreach programs, and public appearances.
  • Provide constructive feedback and mentorship to choir members to support their musical growth.
  • Attend staff meetings and contribute to the overall strategic planning of the orchestra.

Required Skills

  • Exceptional conducting skills with a clear and expressive technique.
  • Profound knowledge of choral literature across various periods and styles.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate singers of diverse skill levels.
  • Strong understanding of vocal pedagogy and choral voice production.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Proven organizational and administrative capabilities, including budget management.
  • Proficiency in music notation software (e.g., Sibelius, Finale) and rehearsal planning tools.
  • Bachelor's degree in Music, Choral Conducting, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience directing and conducting choral ensembles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in Choral Conducting or a related discipline.
  • Experience with a community or professional-level choir or orchestra.
  • Ability to play piano for rehearsals and accompaniment.
  • Knowledge of various languages for proper diction in choral works.
  • Experience in grant writing or fundraising for arts organizations.
