Job Description

The University of California Museum of Paleontology (UCMP) is seeking a motivated and meticulous Junior Fossil Handler to join our dedicated team. This is an entry-level, full-time position offering weekly pay, perfect for individuals with no prior experience in paleontology but a strong interest in the field. Key Responsibilities
- Safely and carefully handle, move, and store fossil specimens of various sizes and fragility.
- Assist senior staff with basic fossil preparation tasks, including initial cleaning, dusting, and minor repair under supervision.
- Learn and apply best practices for specimen conservation and preservation.
- Accurately support the cataloging and inventory of specimens, including data entry into our collection management systems.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the preparation labs and collection storage areas.
- Follow precise instructions and protocols for specimen care and laboratory procedures.
- Assist with the setup and dismantling of exhibits or research projects as needed.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
- Adhere to all museum safety regulations and guidelines.
Required Skills
- Strong attention to detail and a meticulous approach to tasks.
- Ability to follow complex instructions accurately and consistently.
- Excellent manual dexterity and fine motor skills for delicate work.
- Physical ability to lift and maneuver objects up to 25 lbs, and stand for extended periods.
- Basic computer literacy (e.g., data entry, email).
- A genuine interest in paleontology, geology, biology, or natural history.
- Reliability and a strong work ethic.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Previous experience in a museum, laboratory, or archival setting (volunteer experience welcome).
- Familiarity with database management or collection software.
- Enrollment or interest in relevant academic programs (e.g., geology, biology, anthropology) at UC Berkeley or nearby institutions.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new skills quickly.
