Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate Scientific Illustrator specializing in Paleontology to join our dynamic research team. This role involves creating accurate, detailed, and visually compelling illustrations of fossil specimens, prehistoric environments, and scientific concepts for publications, educational materials, and museum exhibits. The ideal candidate will possess strong abilities in both digital and traditional art techniques, a deep understanding of paleontological subject matter, and a commitment to scientific accuracy and artistic excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce highly accurate and detailed scientific illustrations of fossil specimens (invertebrates, vertebrates, plants, trace fossils) using both traditional drawing methods (pen and ink, graphite) and digital tools (Adobe Creative Suite).
- Collaborate closely with paleontologists and researchers to understand specific anatomical features, taphonomic details, and scientific narratives required for each illustration.
- Reconstruct prehistoric flora and fauna in their paleoenvironments based on scientific data and expert consultation.
- Prepare illustrations for peer-reviewed scientific publications, including plate layouts and figure preparation according to journal specifications.
- Develop visual materials for educational outreach programs, museum exhibits, presentations, and online content.
- Maintain a digital archive of all produced artwork and manage associated metadata.
- Contribute to the development of visual communication strategies for various research projects.
- Stay updated with new illustration technologies, techniques, and paleontological discoveries.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in scientific illustration, specifically within paleontology or related natural sciences.
- Proficiency in both traditional art techniques (pen and ink, graphite, watercolor) and digital illustration software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
- Strong understanding of anatomical accuracy, perspective, and lighting for biological subjects.
- Ability to interpret complex scientific data and translate it into clear, accurate visual representations.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with researchers and educators.
- Portfolio demonstrating a range of scientific illustration work, with a focus on paleontological subjects.
- Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Scientific Illustration, Paleontology, Biology, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Scientific Illustration or a related field.
- Experience with 3D modeling software (e.g., ZBrush, Blender) for scientific visualizations.
- Knowledge of photography and image editing for scientific documentation.
- Familiarity with museum exhibit design principles.
- Experience working in an academic or museum environment.
