Job Description
We are seeking an innovative and dedicated Materials Scientist with a strong background in chemistry and a passion for aerospace applications to join our advanced materials research and development team. In this role, you will be instrumental in developing, characterizing, and implementing novel materials for critical aerospace and defense systems. You will work on cutting-edge projects, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and contribute to the advancement of next-generation technologies. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research and development of new materials, focusing on polymers, composites, and advanced ceramics, for aerospace applications.
- Perform extensive characterization of material properties using various analytical techniques (e.g., spectroscopy, microscopy, thermal analysis, mechanical testing).
- Design and optimize material formulations and processing methods to meet specific performance requirements and environmental conditions.
- Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and program teams to integrate new materials into product designs and production processes.
- Troubleshoot material-related issues, conduct failure analysis, and propose effective solutions.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, presentations, and documentation of research findings and material specifications.
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies and scientific advancements in materials science and chemistry relevant to the aerospace industry.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and quality standards in all laboratory and testing activities.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of hands-on experience in materials research and development, preferably in an aerospace or defense context.
- Strong expertise in the synthesis, processing, and characterization of advanced materials (e.g., polymers, composites, ceramics).
- Proficiency with analytical techniques such as FTIR, SEM/TEM, XRD, DSC, TGA, DMA, and mechanical testing.
- Demonstrated ability to design experiments, analyze data, and draw scientific conclusions.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to research challenges.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with additive manufacturing processes and materials for aerospace applications.
- Familiarity with aerospace industry standards and qualification processes (e.g., AS9100, MIL-SPECs).
- Experience in computational materials science or modeling (e.g., FEA, molecular dynamics).
- Prior experience working on government contracts or classified projects.
- Demonstrated project leadership or mentorship experience.
