Job Description
Terracon Consultants, Inc. is seeking a passionate and driven Junior Earth Scientist with a specialization in Paleontology to join our dynamic team in Wichita, Kansas. This multi-skilled role offers an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career professional to apply their paleontological expertise within a broader earth science context, contributing to diverse projects ranging from environmental impact assessments to site investigations. You will work alongside experienced geologists and environmental scientists, gaining hands-on experience and contributing to projects that shape our communities and protect our natural heritage. This is a full-time, on-site position where you will grow your skills in both field and office environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct paleontological surveys and impact assessments for construction, infrastructure, and resource development projects.
- Identify, document, and recover fossil resources in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Perform geological fieldwork, including soil logging, rock core description, and geophysical data collection.
- Assist with environmental site assessments (Phase I and II) and hazardous materials investigations.
- Analyze geological and paleontological data using GIS and other specialized software.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, maps, and figures summarizing findings and recommendations.
- Collaborate with senior scientists and project managers on various earth science projects.
- Maintain accurate field notes, data logs, and project documentation.
- Adhere to all company safety protocols and environmental regulations.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Geology, Paleontology, Earth Science, or a closely related field.
- Strong foundational knowledge of paleontological principles, stratigraphy, and sedimentology.
- Demonstrated ability to identify common fossil groups and geological formations.
- Proficiency in data collection, organization, and basic analysis.
- Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software (e.g., ArcGIS).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to perform physically demanding fieldwork in various weather conditions.
- Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Paleontology or related field.
- Previous internship or professional experience in environmental consulting, geological surveying, or paleontological resource management.
- Familiarity with federal and state environmental regulations (e.g., NEPA, cultural resource management).
- Experience with geological modeling software or advanced statistical analysis tools.
- OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
