Job Description

UTRGV invites enthusiastic and dedicated students to apply for the High Energy Physics & Particle Accelerator Intern position. This unique internship offers an immersive experience into the fascinating world of fundamental particles and the technology that probes their nature. Working under the guidance of experienced faculty, the intern will contribute to ongoing research projects, which may include analyzing data from major particle accelerator experiments (e.g., CERN, Fermilab), conducting simulations, or contributing to theoretical models. This hybrid role allows for a blend of on-campus collaboration and remote computational work, providing flexibility while ensuring access to necessary resources and mentorship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist faculty and researchers in analyzing large datasets generated from particle accelerator experiments.
  • Develop and run simulations of particle interactions or detector responses using specialized software.
  • Conduct comprehensive literature reviews on specific topics within high energy physics.
  • Participate actively in research group meetings, contributing ideas and learning from discussions.
  • Prepare and present research findings in both written and oral formats.
  • Contribute to the development of scientific papers or conference presentations.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Strong foundational knowledge in classical mechanics, electromagnetism, and modern physics.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C++).
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior coursework in quantum mechanics, particle physics, or nuclear physics.
  • Familiarity with scientific computing tools (e.g., ROOT, Geant4, MATLAB).
  • Previous research experience in a physics or engineering laboratory.
  • Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems.
