Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated Hospital Waste Operative to join our team in York. This critical role involves the safe, compliant, and efficient management of clinical and general waste within a demanding hospital environment. You will play a vital part in maintaining the highest standards of health, safety, and environmental regulations, focusing on both clinical waste disposal and promoting recyclable initiatives. This is an on-site position requiring a proactive and meticulous approach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect, segregate, and transport clinical and general waste streams safely and efficiently throughout the hospital premises.
  • Operate waste compactors, balers, and other relevant equipment in adherence to safety guidelines.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all relevant waste management regulations, including HTM 07-01 and COSHH.
  • Maintain the cleanliness, hygiene, and organization of all waste storage areas.
  • Assist with waste audits, data collection, and reporting as required.
  • Adhere rigorously to all company and hospital health and safety protocols, including the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Actively promote and support recycling initiatives to minimize environmental impact.
  • Identify and report any issues or discrepancies related to waste management procedures or equipment.

Required Skills

  • A strong understanding and commitment to health and safety procedures.
  • Ability to follow detailed guidelines and protocols meticulously.
  • Physical fitness, capable of lifting and moving waste containers.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills for record-keeping and reporting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in waste management, especially within a healthcare or similar regulated environment.
  • Knowledge of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations.
  • Full UK driving license (desirable but not essential).
  • Formal environmental awareness or waste management training.
