Job Description
AECOM is seeking an Environmental Compliance Monitor with a specialization in Paleontology to join our dynamic team in El Paso, Texas. In this role, you will be crucial in ensuring environmental compliance, specifically focusing on paleontological resources, for various large-scale infrastructure projects. You will conduct field monitoring, assist with surveys, documentation, and reporting to mitigate impacts on sensitive resources in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. This position requires a strong understanding of environmental laws, paleontological field methods, and a commitment to project success and environmental stewardship.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct on-site monitoring for paleontological resources during infrastructure construction activities.
- Implement project-specific Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) and Paleontological Resource Management Plans (PRMPs).
- Document field observations, including discoveries, disturbances, and mitigation measures, through daily reports, photographs, and detailed notes.
- Liaise with project managers, construction crews, clients, and regulatory agencies regarding environmental compliance matters.
- Assist with the collection, preliminary identification, and curation of paleontological specimens as needed.
- Prepare technical reports and assist in permit application processes related to environmental and paleontological compliance.
- Ensure adherence to all applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations (e.g., NEPA, NHPA Section 106, Antiquities Act).
- Provide environmental awareness training to construction personnel.
- Conduct pre-construction environmental site assessments.
- Respond to environmental incidents and provide initial assessment and reporting.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in environmental compliance monitoring, particularly on large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated experience with paleontological field methods, including survey, excavation, and documentation.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations applicable to Texas (e.g., NEPA, Antiquities Act, specific state requirements).
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and permits.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently in a field environment and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to various project sites.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Paleontology or a closely related field.
- Certification as a Paleontological Resource Monitor or similar.
- Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) for mapping and data management.
- OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour Construction Safety certification.
- Experience in a consulting environment.
- Familiarity with Texas-specific paleontological resources and geological formations.
