Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and detail-oriented Coastal Paleontology Sorter with a focus on marine fossils to join our dedicated team at the Grand Prairie Research Annex. This essential role involves the initial processing, sorting, and basic identification of fossil samples collected from various coastal field sites. The successful candidate will play a crucial part in the preparation of specimens for further analysis by paleontologists and researchers, contributing directly to our ongoing scientific investigations into marine paleoenvironments. This is an on-site position requiring manual dexterity and a keen eye for detail.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive and meticulously unpack incoming fossil samples from coastal collection sites.
- Carefully sort bulk sediment and rock samples to identify and separate marine fossil specimens.
- Perform initial cleaning and basic preparation of fossil materials using appropriate tools and techniques.
- Conduct preliminary identification and categorization of fossils based on established protocols (e.g., shell fragments, vertebrate remains, microfossils).
- Accurately record and catalog specimen data, including provenance, initial observations, and counts.
- Assist with the organization and maintenance of the fossil collection and laboratory space.
- Adhere strictly to health, safety, and environmental guidelines during all sorting and preparation activities.
- Collaborate effectively with paleontologists, researchers, and other laboratory staff.

- Strong organizational and record-keeping abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a laboratory setting.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience with microscopy for sorting microfossil samples.
