Job Description
The City of Santa Rosa is seeking dedicated and vigilant individuals to join our team as Part-time School Crossing Guards, with a specific focus on weekend community events. This vital role ensures the safe passage of pedestrians, particularly children, across designated intersections during various city-sponsored festivals, markets, parades, and other special events that occur on weekends. You will play a crucial role in maintaining traffic flow, educating pedestrians on safe crossing practices, and serving as a friendly, reassuring presence within our community. This position requires a commitment to public safety, excellent observational skills, and the ability to work effectively outdoors in various weather conditions. This is an on-site position, requiring your physical presence at designated crossing points during events.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the safe passage of children and pedestrians across designated intersections during weekend community events.
- Manage vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow to prevent accidents and congestion.
- Educate pedestrians and drivers on traffic safety rules and regulations.
- Maintain a visible and authoritative presence at assigned crossing points.
- Report any unusual or unsafe conditions to appropriate city personnel.
- Respond to inquiries from the public with courtesy and provide helpful information when possible.
- Arrive punctually and remain attentive throughout assigned shifts.
- Operate essential crossing equipment (e.g., stop sign paddle).
Required Skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong sense of responsibility and reliability.
- Ability to remain alert and focused for extended periods.
- Good judgment and decision-making abilities under pressure.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods outdoors.
- Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check.
- Legally authorized to work in the USA.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a crossing guard or in a similar public safety role.
- Familiarity with local traffic laws and pedestrian safety guidelines.
- Ability to speak Spanish or other languages common in the community.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
