Job Description
Are you fascinated by the ancient world and eager to contribute to scientific discovery? The Perot Museum of Nature and Science is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our team as a No Experience Fossil Preparator. This is a unique opportunity for individuals with no prior experience in fossil preparation, as we are committed to providing comprehensive, hands-on training on site. You will learn the intricate art and science of preparing, conserving, and mounting fossils for research, exhibition, and educational purposes. This entry-level role is perfect for someone with exceptional patience, keen attention to detail, and a strong desire to learn specialized scientific techniques. You will work closely with experienced paleontologists and preparators in our state-of-the-art laboratory facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive comprehensive, hands-on training in various fossil preparation techniques, including mechanical preparation (using air scribes, dental tools), chemical preparation, and stabilization methods.
- Carefully clean, repair, and stabilize fossilized specimens under the guidance of senior preparators.
- Document preparation procedures, specimen condition, and progress meticulously.
- Assist with the conservation, restoration, and mounting of fossils for museum exhibits and research collections.
- Learn proper handling, storage, and cataloging protocols for fossil specimens.
- Maintain a clean and organized laboratory workspace, adhering to all safety guidelines.
- Participate in field excursions to assist with fossil excavation and collection, as needed.
- Collaborate effectively with team members on various paleontological projects.

Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated interest in paleontology, geology, biology, art, or a related field.
- Previous experience with delicate manual tasks, crafts, or precision work.
- Ability to work comfortably in a laboratory environment with various tools and materials.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field is a plus but not required.
