Job Description

AECOM is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Junior Earth Scientist with a specialization or strong interest in Paleontology to join our dynamic team in Santa Clarita, California. This multi-skilled role will involve a blend of field investigation, laboratory analysis, and data interpretation, contributing to a diverse range of environmental and geological projects. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals, apply scientific principles to real-world challenges, and develop a comprehensive skill set in geoscience. This is an on-site position based out of our Santa Clarita office, with regular fieldwork required across the region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct paleontological resource impact assessments and mitigation planning in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Perform geological and paleontological fieldwork, including site reconnaissance, fossil recovery, stratigraphic logging, and mapping.
  • Collect, process, and prepare geological and paleontological samples for detailed laboratory analysis and identification.
  • Assist with the interpretation of complex geological and paleontological data, contributing to project reports and findings.
  • Prepare technical reports, maps, and presentations using various software tools.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment, ensuring proper functionality and safety protocols.
  • Adhere strictly to safety protocols, quality control procedures, and environmental compliance standards.
  • Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, including geologists, environmental scientists, and project managers, on various projects.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Paleontology, Earth Science, or a closely related field.
  • Strong foundational knowledge in stratigraphy, sedimentology, and paleontology.
  • Proven ability to conduct fieldwork in various outdoor conditions and terrains.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex scientific information clearly.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for data management and reporting.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Valid driver's license and a good driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Paleontology, Geology, or a related field.
  • Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for mapping and data visualization.
  • Knowledge of California geology and paleontological resources.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations (e.g., CEQA, NEPA) related to paleontological resource management.
  • Basic understanding of fossil preparation and curation techniques.
