Job Description

Guide Dogs for the Blind is seeking a dedicated Guide Dog Training Assistant to join our team in Santa Clara, CA. You will play a crucial role in the early stages of our future guide dogs’ development, ensuring they receive the best care and foundational training. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Guide Dog Instructors with daily training activities and exercises for guide dogs in various stages of development.
  • Provide consistent care for dogs, including feeding, grooming, cleaning kennels, and ensuring their overall well-being and health.
  • Observe and document dog behavior, progress, and any health concerns, reporting findings to senior trainers.
  • Support the implementation of training protocols, socialization programs, and enrichment activities.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of training areas, kennels, and equipment.
  • Handle and exercise dogs safely and effectively, following established procedures and guidelines.
  • Participate in team meetings and ongoing training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Assist with transportation of dogs to and from training areas or veterinary appointments as needed.

Required Skills

  • Genuine passion for animals and their welfare.
  • Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
  • Physical stamina to handle large dogs, walk extensively, and perform tasks that require bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and standing for long periods.
  • Comfort working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Basic computer literacy for record-keeping and communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous volunteer experience with animal shelters, rescue organizations, or animal care.
  • Experience in a structured environment requiring adherence to strict protocols.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
