Job Description
We are seeking a visionary Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) to lead our new venture focusing on cutting-edge agricultural technology startups. This role is pivotal in defining the scientific strategy, driving R&D, and identifying disruptive technologies that will shape the future of sustainable agriculture. The CSO will be a key member of the leadership team, responsible for building and mentoring scientific teams, forging external partnerships, and translating scientific breakthroughs into viable commercial products. This position offers significant equity participation, reflecting its impact on our strategic growth initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a comprehensive scientific strategy aligned with the venture's business objectives and Corteva's long-term vision.
- Lead the identification, evaluation, and incubation of promising deep tech and biotechnology solutions for agricultural applications.
- Build, mentor, and inspire a high-performing team of scientists, researchers, and engineers.
- Drive all aspects of R&D, from concept generation and experimental design to data analysis and validation.
- Establish and manage strategic collaborations with academic institutions, research organizations, and external startups.
- Oversee intellectual property development and portfolio management.
- Represent the company's scientific vision to investors, partners, and the broader scientific community.
- Ensure scientific rigor, ethical practices, and compliance with all relevant regulations.
- Contribute to fundraising efforts and investor relations, articulating the scientific value proposition.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. in a relevant scientific field (e.g., Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Agronomy, Data Science, Chemical Engineering).
- 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in scientific research and development, preferably within an agricultural biotechnology or deep tech environment.
- Proven track record of translating scientific discoveries into commercial products or successful ventures.
- Strong understanding of venture capital, startup ecosystems, and equity structures.
- Demonstrated ability to build, lead, and manage high-performing scientific teams.
- Exceptional strategic thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
- Deep expertise in cutting-edge agricultural technologies, including genomics, gene editing, AI/ML in agriculture, or precision farming.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a Chief Scientific Officer or similar senior scientific leadership role within a startup or venture capital-backed company.
- Network within the agricultural technology or venture capital communities.
- Experience managing complex IP portfolios and regulatory affairs in a scientific context.
- MBA or significant business acumen in addition to scientific expertise.
