Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and detail-oriented Public Sector Payroll Assistant to join our finance department. This role is crucial for ensuring the accurate and timely processing of payroll for city employees, adhering to all federal, state, and local regulations. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of payroll principles, excellent organizational skills, and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality. Key Responsibilities
- Process bi-weekly payroll for all city employees, including data entry, verification, and reconciliation.
- Review timesheets, leave requests, and other payroll-related documents for accuracy and completeness.
- Calculate and process deductions, garnishments, and benefits contributions.
- Respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll, deductions, and tax information.
- Assist with the preparation of payroll reports, tax filings, and year-end statements (W-2s).
- Maintain accurate payroll records and ensure compliance with all relevant labor laws and city policies.
- Collaborate with HR and other departments to resolve payroll discrepancies and issues.
- Contribute to process improvements and system upgrades for payroll operations.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in payroll processing, preferably in the public sector or a large organization.
- Proficiency with payroll software and HRIS systems (e.g., Oracle, SAP, Workday).
- Strong understanding of federal and state payroll regulations, including FLSA, FMLA, and tax laws.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Solid data entry and verification skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) is a plus.
- Experience with public sector accounting principles and governmental payroll systems.
