Job Description

We are seeking an innovative and highly motivated Materials Scientist with a strong background in chemistry and a dedicated focus on aerospace applications. In this crucial role, you will be instrumental in the research, development, and characterization of advanced materials for various aerospace platforms, including high-performance composites, coatings, polymers, and metallic alloys. You will contribute to the entire product lifecycle, from initial concept and material selection to failure analysis and process optimization. This position offers a unique opportunity to apply your chemical expertise to solve complex challenges in a fast-paced, high-impact environment, with relocation assistance provided for qualified candidates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and development of novel materials with specific performance requirements for aerospace applications.
  • Perform chemical and physical characterization of materials using techniques such as spectroscopy (FTIR, Raman), chromatography (GC-MS, HPLC), thermal analysis (DSC, TGA), and microscopy (SEM, TEM).
  • Design and execute experiments to evaluate material properties, performance, and long-term durability under extreme aerospace conditions.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to select appropriate materials for new designs and improve existing components.
  • Analyze material failures and provide root cause analysis, recommending corrective actions.
  • Develop and optimize material processing techniques to enhance performance and manufacturability.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, presentations, and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Stay abreast of new developments in materials science, chemistry, and aerospace technologies.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and quality control procedures.

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. or Master's degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience (post-academic) in materials research and development, with a focus on chemistry.
  • Demonstrated expertise in chemical characterization techniques.
  • Strong understanding of structure-property relationships in various material classes (polymers, composites, metals, ceramics).
  • Proven ability to design experiments, analyze data, and troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with aerospace materials and applications.
  • Proficiency in advanced analytical instrumentation and data analysis software.
  • Familiarity with materials modeling and simulation tools.
  • Experience with lean manufacturing principles and quality systems (e.g., AS9100).
  • Publications or patents in relevant materials science or chemistry areas.

Perks & Benefits

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package (medical, dental, vision).
  • Generous paid time off and holidays.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Tuition reimbursement and professional development opportunities.
