Job Description

As a Virtual Proofreader specializing in self-published books, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the highest quality of written content. You will be responsible for meticulously reviewing manuscripts for errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and basic syntax. This 100% remote position requires a keen eye for detail, a strong understanding of English language conventions, and a passion for helping independent authors polish their work to professional standards. You will work on a diverse range of genres, contributing directly to the success of self-published authors globally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Thoroughly proofread self-published book manuscripts to identify and correct typographical errors, grammatical mistakes, punctuation errors, and inconsistencies.
  • Ensure adherence to specified style guides (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style, AP style) as required.
  • Provide clear and constructive feedback to authors regarding identified issues.
  • Manage multiple proofreading projects efficiently while maintaining high quality standards.
  • Meet strict deadlines and turnaround times.
  • Maintain confidentiality of author manuscripts and proprietary information.

Required Skills

  • Exceptional command of the English language (grammar, spelling, punctuation).
  • Proven ability to identify and correct errors in written text.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and its tracking features.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Reliable internet connection and a dedicated home office setup.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.

  • Previous experience in proofreading or editing, especially for fiction or non-fiction books.
