Job Description

CenterPoint Energy is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Trainee Gas/Electricity Inspector to join our public utilities team in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This entry-level position is designed for individuals eager to start a career in the energy sector, providing a comprehensive training program to develop the skills necessary for inspecting gas and electrical infrastructure. You will work under the guidance of experienced professionals, learning safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and the technical aspects of utility inspection to ensure the integrity and reliability of our energy delivery systems. This is an on-site position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in extensive on-the-job training and classroom instruction covering gas and electricity distribution systems, safety regulations, and inspection techniques.
  • Assist senior inspectors in conducting routine field inspections of gas pipelines, meters, electrical lines, transformers, and other utility equipment.
  • Learn to identify potential hazards, defects, and non-compliance issues in accordance with federal, state, and company standards.
  • Document inspection findings accurately and meticulously, including photographic evidence and detailed reports.
  • Collaborate with field crews and engineering teams to understand maintenance and repair processes.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and others.
  • Develop a foundational understanding of public utility operations and regulatory requirements.
  • Engage in continuous learning and professional development to prepare for independent inspection duties.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Strong commitment to safety and adherence to strict protocols.
  • Excellent observation skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to learn and apply technical information effectively.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency for documentation and reporting.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and traverse uneven terrain.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or vocational training in a technical field (e.g., electrical technology, mechanical systems).
  • Prior experience in a field-based role or construction environment.
  • Familiarity with basic hand tools and measuring equipment.
  • Demonstrated interest in the energy or utility industry.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
