Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated Think Tank Archivist with a strong focus on historical records to join our Special Collections team. The successful candidate will be instrumental in the acquisition, preservation, organization, and accessibility of significant historical collections, particularly those related to political, social, and scientific thought within the American Southwest and beyond. This role requires a meticulous approach to historical documentation, an understanding of archival best practices, and a passion for making history accessible to researchers and the public. You will contribute to the intellectual life of the university by managing collections that illuminate key periods and movements, ensuring their long-term integrity and usability for future generations of scholars.

Key Responsibilities

  • Acquire, appraise, arrange, and describe historical collections in accordance with archival standards (DACS).
  • Conduct historical research to contextualize collections and enhance metadata.
  • Implement preservation strategies for various formats of historical materials, including paper, photographs, and born-digital records.
  • Develop and manage finding aids, digital exhibits, and online resources to improve access to collections.
  • Provide reference services and research support to internal and external users, guiding them through historical archives.
  • Collaborate with university faculty, departments, and external organizations on collection development and research projects.
  • Train and supervise student assistants or interns on archival processing and preservation techniques.
  • Contribute to grant writing and fundraising efforts to support archival initiatives.
  • Stay current with emerging trends and technologies in archival science and historical preservation.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program with an archival concentration, OR a Master's degree in History, Archival Studies, or a related field with significant archival experience.
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional archival experience, specifically with historical records.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of archival theory and best practices (e.g., DACS, MARC, EAD).
  • Experience with archival collection management software (e.g., ArchivesSpace, Archivists' Toolkit).
  • Strong research skills, particularly in historical context and provenance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lift and move archival boxes (up to 40 lbs).
  • Proficiency with digital preservation techniques and born-digital records management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in an academic library or think tank environment.
  • Familiarity with the history of the American Southwest or specific historical periods relevant to the institution's collection strengths.
  • Knowledge of copyright and intellectual property issues pertaining to archival materials.
  • Experience with digitization projects and digital asset management.
  • Proficiency in a second language, especially Spanish, due to regional relevance.
  • Certification from the Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA).
