Job Description

Join Des Moines Public Schools as a Speech & Language Therapist and make a profound impact on the lives of K-12 students. This on-site role is crucial for assessing, diagnosing, and treating speech, language, communication, and swallowing disorders within an educational setting. We are seeking passionate and dedicated professionals eager to contribute to a student-centered environment. You will collaborate with educators, parents, and other specialists to develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs), ensuring students receive the support they need to thrive academically and socially.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify speech, language, and communication impairments.
  • Develop and implement individualized or group therapy plans based on student needs and IEP goals.
  • Provide direct speech and language therapy services to students from K-12.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other school staff to integrate therapy goals into the classroom and home environments.
  • Monitor student progress, adjust therapy plans as necessary, and maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, providing expert input on student progress and future needs.
  • Educate school staff and parents on communication strategies and support techniques.
  • Stay current with best practices and advancements in speech-language pathology.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Sciences and Disorders.
  • Current or eligible for Iowa SLP licensure.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from ASHA, or eligibility to obtain.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and treat a diverse range of communication disorders in children.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for collaboration with students, staff, and parents.
  • Proficiency in developing and implementing IEPs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a school-based setting.
  • Experience with a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic tools and techniques.
  • Bilingual abilities (especially Spanish) are a plus.
  • Knowledge of federal and state special education regulations.
