Job Description

Join our dynamic team at BBC Studios as a Special Effects (SFX) Workshop Assistant. This unique role offers a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the creation of captivating props, sets, and special effects for a diverse range of television and digital productions. You will work within a bustling workshop environment, supporting experienced fabricators and SFX artists in bringing imaginative concepts to tangible realities. This position requires a keen eye for detail, a proactive attitude, and a passion for creative construction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist SFX technicians and fabricators in the construction and assembly of props, set pieces, and special effects rigs.
  • Prepare materials and tools for various fabrication tasks, ensuring a tidy and organized workspace.
  • Perform basic cutting, shaping, sanding, and finishing of materials such as wood, metal, plastics, and foams.
  • Support on-set installation and removal of SFX elements, ensuring safety protocols are followed.
  • Maintain workshop machinery and equipment, reporting any malfunctions or maintenance needs.
  • Assist with inventory management of materials and consumables.
  • Collaborate effectively with the creative and production teams to understand project requirements.
  • Contribute creative input and problem-solving solutions to fabrication challenges.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrable interest or experience in creative fabrication, model making, or prop construction.
  • Basic understanding of workshop tools and machinery (e.g., hand tools, power tools).
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and work accurately from technical drawings or plans.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality craftsmanship.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Ability to work safely in a workshop environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Vocational training or relevant qualification in art, design, theatre technical arts, or fabrication.
  • Experience with various materials such as wood, metal, resins, or foam.
  • Knowledge of health and safety practices in a workshop setting.
  • A portfolio demonstrating personal projects in model making, prop design, or creative construction.
