Job Description

We are seeking a compassionate and enthusiastic Special Education Music Aide to join our team in Portland, Maine. This is a unique opportunity to provide meaningful support to children with special needs through the power of music. You will work under the supervision of a certified special education teacher and/or music therapist, assisting with the implementation of individualized education programs (IEPs) and activity plans focused on musical engagement. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist special education teachers and music therapists in facilitating music-based activities and lessons for students with diverse needs.
  • Provide one-on-one and small group support to students during musical instruction and sensory experiences.
  • Help adapt musical instruments, materials, and activities to meet individual student requirements and abilities.
  • Support the classroom environment by preparing materials, organizing supplies, and maintaining a positive and inclusive space.
  • Observe and document student progress and behavior, reporting observations to the lead teacher or therapist.
  • Encourage student participation, engagement, and social interaction through music.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student and family information.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities provided by Easterseals Maine.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Passion for working with children, especially those with special needs
  • Basic understanding and appreciation of music
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team
  • Reliability and strong work ethic

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience (volunteer or paid) working with children or individuals with disabilities
  • Some college coursework in education, music, or a related field
  • Familiarity with various musical instruments or vocal techniques
