Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Aide to join our team for the upcoming school term. This term-time only position is critical in supporting students with diverse learning needs within a local school district setting. The successful candidate will work closely with teachers, other educational professionals, and parents to provide individualized support, foster an inclusive learning environment, and assist students in achieving their educational and personal goals. This role requires patience, adaptability, and a genuine commitment to student well-being and development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one or small group support to students with special education needs, as directed by the classroom teacher and resource teachers.
  • Assist students with academic tasks, personal care, mobility, and social-emotional development.
  • Implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and behavioural intervention plans (BIPs) under the guidance of professional staff.
  • Observe and document student progress, behaviour, and challenges, reporting findings to the teaching team.
  • Facilitate communication and social interaction among students, promoting an inclusive classroom environment.
  • Prepare and organize learning materials, adaptive equipment, and classroom resources.
  • Support students during transitions, recess, lunch, and other non-instructional times.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional ethics and school division policies.
  • Participate in professional development and team meetings as required.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 6 months of experience working with children or youth, preferably in an educational or care setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse learners, including those with special needs
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude
  • Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively as part of a team
  • Basic knowledge of child development and learning principles

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate or diploma in Special Education, Child and Youth Care, or a related field
  • Experience implementing IEPs or BIPs
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Familiarity with various adaptive technologies or communication aids
  • Knowledge of behavior management techniques
