Job Description

The University of Memphis Libraries is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Junior Digital Archivist Intern to join our Special Collections team. This paid internship offers an invaluable opportunity for a current student to gain hands-on experience in digital archiving, preservation, and access. The intern will assist with various projects related to the digitization, organization, and description of unique archival materials, contributing to the long-term accessibility of our collections. This role is ideal for students interested in library science, information management, history, or related fields, providing practical skills and exposure to professional archival practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the digitization of analog archival materials, including documents, photographs, and audio/visual recordings, using professional-grade equipment.
  • Perform quality control checks on digitized images and metadata to ensure accuracy and adherence to archival standards.
  • Create and edit metadata for digital objects, following established cataloging and descriptive guidelines.
  • Organize and manage digital files on local and network drives, ensuring proper naming conventions and folder structures.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of digital preservation strategies.
  • Assist with basic research requests related to digital collections.
  • Learn and apply best practices for digital archiving and records management.
  • Collaborate with Special Collections staff on ongoing projects and initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university program (undergraduate or graduate).
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to learn new software and technologies quickly.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated interest in archives, libraries, history, or cultural heritage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Enrollment in a Library and Information Science program (MLIS, MSIS) or a related field (e.g., History, Public History, Digital Humanities).
  • Familiarity with archival descriptive standards (e.g., DACS, EAD).
  • Experience with image editing software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop) or scanning equipment.
  • Basic understanding of metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core).
