Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Paleontology Crew Chief to lead our field operations in Vallejo, CA and surrounding regions. This critical role involves supervising field crews, overseeing the identification, recovery, and documentation of paleontological resources, and ensuring compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local regulations. The Crew Chief will be instrumental in project planning, logistics, and fostering a safe and productive work environment. This is a leadership opportunity for a seasoned paleontologist passionate about hands-on fieldwork and team mentorship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise paleontological field crews, including assigning tasks, monitoring progress, and ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
  • Conduct paleontological resource monitoring, identification, collection, and recovery during construction or development projects.
  • Ensure all fieldwork is conducted in compliance with NEPA, CEQA, and other applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Prepare detailed field notes, stratigraphic columns, locality records, and fossil inventory forms.
  • Manage project logistics, equipment, and supplies, including coordination with project managers and clients.
  • Provide on-the-job training and mentorship to junior paleontologists and field technicians.
  • Perform preliminary laboratory preparation and curation of recovered specimens.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, regulatory agencies, and project stakeholders.
  • Operate and maintain field vehicles and equipment safely.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in paleontological fieldwork and resource management.
  • Demonstrated experience in a supervisory or crew chief role.
  • Thorough knowledge of Cenozoic and Mesozoic fossil taxa relevant to California and the Western US.
  • Proficiency in various paleontological field methods, including pedestrian survey, trenching, bulk sampling, and mitigation excavation.
  • Familiarity with federal (e.g., NEPA) and California state (e.g., CEQA) environmental regulations pertaining to cultural and paleontological resources.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret geologic maps, stratigraphic sections, and construction plans.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate 4×4 vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Paleontology or related field.
  • Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) for mapping and data management.
  • Experience with fossil preparation and curation techniques.
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR.
  • Experience working with diverse geological settings within California.
