Job Description
As a Paleontological Resource Specialist at AECOM, you will play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to paleontological resources. This position focuses on the regulatory aspects of resource management, including permitting, impact assessment, mitigation planning, and consultation. You will work on a diverse range of projects, primarily within the infrastructure, energy, and development sectors, providing expert advice and technical support to project teams and clients. This role requires a strong understanding of paleontological principles, regulatory frameworks, and practical experience in resource management.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct paleontological resource inventories, evaluations, and impact assessments in accordance with relevant regulatory frameworks (e.g., NEPA, NHPA, state-specific statutes).
- Develop and implement paleontological resource management plans, mitigation strategies, and monitoring programs.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports, permitting documents, and environmental compliance documentation for regulatory agencies and clients.
- Serve as a technical expert during consultation processes with federal, state, and tribal entities regarding paleontological resources.
- Provide regulatory guidance and support to project managers, engineers, and clients throughout project lifecycles.
- Review and interpret geological maps, paleontological data, and project designs to identify potential resource conflicts.
- Assist with business development activities, including proposal writing and client presentations related to paleontological services.
- Ensure project deliverables meet quality standards and are completed within scope, schedule, and budget.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of federal (e.g., NEPA, NHPA, PRPA) and state paleontological resource laws and regulations.
- Proven experience in conducting paleontological surveys, impact assessments, and mitigation planning.
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills for report preparation and client interaction.
- Ability to interpret geological and paleontological data and apply regulatory requirements effectively.
- Proficiency with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) for data management and mapping.
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel for fieldwork as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Paleontology, Geology, or a related discipline.
- Experience working with large-scale infrastructure projects (e.g., transportation, energy, water).
- Demonstrated experience with agency consultation and permit negotiation.
- Familiarity with HPI (Human Paleontological Investigation) methodologies.
- Professional certification (e.g., Registered Professional Geologist).
