Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Oversize Load Pilot Driver to join our remote team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for safely escorting oversize and overweight loads across various regions, ensuring compliance with all state and federal regulations. This is a remote position where your primary coordination and reporting will be handled digitally, but significant travel will be required to meet loads at designated points and perform escort duties on the road. You will play a vital part in maintaining safe passage for our specialized freight, protecting both the load and public safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate an escort vehicle in accordance with all applicable state and federal regulations for oversize/overweight load movements.
- Maintain constant communication with the primary load driver, dispatch, and relevant authorities to ensure smooth and safe transit.
- Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the escort vehicle and report any issues.
- Identify and mitigate potential hazards on the route, including low overhead clearances, narrow bridges, traffic congestion, and utility lines.
- Assist the load driver with maneuvering through challenging areas, including turns, intersections, and construction zones.
- Ensure all required permits, signs, flags, and lighting are correctly displayed and utilized on both the escort vehicle and the oversize load.
- Complete and submit all necessary documentation, including logs, trip reports, and incident reports, accurately and on time.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and procedures.
- Represent ATS professionally to the public and regulatory officials.
Required Skills
- Minimum 2 years of experience as an oversize load pilot/escort driver.
- Possession of a valid driver's license with an excellent driving record (no major violations in the last 3 years).
- Thorough knowledge of DOT regulations and state-specific oversize/overweight permit requirements.
- Proficiency in reading maps, using GPS, and navigating complex routes.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of clear and concise interaction.
- Ability to work independently and make critical decisions quickly and effectively.
- Flexibility to travel extensively and work irregular hours, including nights and weekends, as required by load schedules.
- Basic mechanical aptitude to handle minor vehicle issues on the road.
Preferred Qualifications
- Nationally recognized pilot car certification (e.g., certifications from recognized pilot car training programs).
- Experience with various types of heavy haul equipment and loads.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs) and digital communication platforms.
