Job Description

Music & Arts is seeking an experienced and passionate Music Audition Coach to guide high school and college-bound students through their crucial music program auditions. This role focuses on preparing students for successful entry into competitive music schools, conservatories, and university music departments. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of audition processes, repertoire selection, performance techniques, and music theory, with a strong ability to tailor coaching to individual student needs across various instruments or vocal disciplines. This is a vital position for students aiming for advanced musical studies, providing them with the expertise and confidence to excel.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one and small group coaching sessions to high school students preparing for college music program auditions.
  • Develop personalized lesson plans focusing on technical proficiency, musicality, sight-reading, ear training, and interview skills.
  • Assist students in selecting appropriate audition repertoire that showcases their strengths and meets specific institutional requirements.
  • Conduct mock auditions and provide constructive feedback to improve performance under pressure.
  • Educate students on typical audition expectations, including theory exams, aural skills tests, and musicianship interviews.
  • Collaborate with students, parents, and academic advisors to track progress and adjust coaching strategies as needed.
  • Maintain detailed records of student progress, lesson content, and audition preparation timelines.
  • Stay informed about current trends and requirements for music programs at various colleges and conservatories.
  • Inspire and motivate students, fostering a positive and encouraging learning environment.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Performance, Music Education, or a related field (Master's preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in music instruction or coaching, with a focus on classical, jazz, or contemporary styles relevant to college auditions.
  • Proficiency in at least one primary instrument or vocal discipline.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of music theory, harmony, and ear training.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and pedagogical skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and learning styles.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in a relevant music discipline.
  • Previous experience on an audition panel for a college music program.
  • Extensive network within the higher education music community.
  • Familiarity with various digital music notation and audio recording software.
  • Experience coaching students for specific conservatories or competitive university programs.
