Job Description

Are you passionate about geology and have a keen eye for detail? AECOM is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Micropaleontology Sorter to join our team in Glendale, CA. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals eager to begin a career in geological sciences, focusing on the meticulous sorting and identification of microfossils using microscopes. You will contribute to crucial biostratigraphic and paleoenvironmental research that supports various projects, from environmental impact assessments to resource exploration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed sorting and identification of microscopic fossils (e.g., foraminifera, radiolarians, nannofossils) from sediment samples under a microscope.
  • Prepare geological samples for micropaleontological analysis, including washing, drying, and sieving.
  • Maintain and clean laboratory equipment, especially microscopes and sieves, to ensure optimal performance.
  • Accurately record and log data obtained from sorting activities into databases or worksheets.
  • Adhere strictly to laboratory safety protocols and quality control procedures.
  • Assist senior micropaleontologists with various tasks as needed, contributing to larger project goals.
  • Organize and curate reference collections of microfossils.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace.

Required Skills

  • Exceptional attention to detail and precision for fine manipulative work.
  • Strong visual acuity and ability to focus for extended periods under a microscope.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including data entry skills (e.g., Microsoft Excel).
  • Ability to follow complex instructions and standard operating procedures accurately.
  • A strong interest in geology, paleontology, or environmental sciences.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple samples.
  • Manual dexterity for handling small samples and tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Geology, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field.
  • Prior experience working in a laboratory setting (academic or professional).
  • Familiarity with various types of microscopes and their operation.
