Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Hospice Music Practitioner to join our compassionate team in Portland, Maine. This pivotal role involves providing therapeutic music interventions to hospice patients and their families, enhancing their quality of life, comfort, and emotional well-being during end-of-life care. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of music therapy principles, exceptional interpersonal skills, and a profound sense of empathy to create meaningful and supportive musical experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess patient and family needs for music therapy services and develop individualized care plans.
  • Deliver therapeutic music interventions, including live music performance, guided imagery, songwriting, and relaxation techniques.
  • Provide comfort, emotional support, and spiritual solace through music to patients at various stages of their illness.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members (nurses, social workers, chaplains) to integrate music therapy into comprehensive patient care.
  • Educate patients, families, and staff on the benefits and applications of music therapy in hospice care.
  • Document patient interactions, progress, and outcomes accurately in electronic health records.
  • Participate in team meetings, in-service training, and continuing education pertinent to hospice and music therapy.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and adhere to ethical guidelines for music therapy practice.
  • Travel to patient homes, facilities, or other locations within the service area as required.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music Therapy or a related field with equivalency.
  • Board-Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) credential.
  • Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience in music therapy, preferably in hospice, palliative care, or grief support settings.
  • Proficiency in playing at least one musical instrument (e.g., guitar, keyboard, harp) and strong vocal abilities.
  • Excellent communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated empathy, compassion, and sensitivity to the needs of terminally ill patients and their families.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage a caseload.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with diverse patient populations and cultural backgrounds.
  • Additional certifications or specialized training in grief counseling or end-of-life care.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record systems.
