Job Description

SAIC is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Hazardous Materials Chemist with a strong focus on safety and compliance to join our environmental services team in Arlington, VA. In this critical role, you will be responsible for managing, characterizing, and ensuring the safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials in strict accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. You will apply your expertise in chemistry to analyze substances, develop safety protocols, conduct site inspections, and provide essential compliance guidance to various projects and clients. This position requires a proactive individual with excellent analytical skills and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of environmental health and safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform chemical analysis and characterization of hazardous materials, wastes, and unknown substances.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive hazardous materials management plans, safety data sheets (SDS), and emergency response procedures.
  • Ensure strict compliance with EPA, OSHA, DOT, RCRA, TSCA, and other relevant federal, state, and local hazardous materials regulations.
  • Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards, assess compliance, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Provide expert guidance and training to personnel on safe handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Manage hazardous waste streams, including identification, segregation, labeling, packaging, and coordination with approved disposal vendors.
  • Prepare and submit required regulatory reports and permits.
  • Investigate incidents involving hazardous materials, determine root causes, and implement preventive measures.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and clients to integrate hazardous materials safety into project lifecycles.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in hazardous materials management, environmental compliance, or industrial hygiene.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal (EPA, OSHA, DOT), state (VA DEQ), and local hazardous waste regulations (e.g., RCRA).
  • Proven ability to perform chemical analysis, interpret laboratory results, and characterize various chemical substances.
  • Experience developing and implementing safety protocols and emergency response plans.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Professional certifications such as CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager), CSP (Certified Safety Professional), or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist).
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • Experience with government contracts or projects involving environmental remediation.
  • Familiarity with waste tracking software or environmental management information systems (EMIS).
