Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Remote FOIA Analyst to join our team, focusing on government transparency initiatives. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to vital public service from the comfort of your home, supporting our mission to provide critical information that fosters transparency and accountability. The successful candidate will be responsible for processing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, ensuring compliance with legal standards, and facilitating the timely release of public records. This role requires exceptional analytical skills, a strong understanding of legal frameworks, and a commitment to upholding the principles of open government.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and process incoming Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests from initial receipt through to final determination.
- Conduct thorough research and analysis of requested documents and information to determine responsiveness and applicability of FOIA exemptions.
- Coordinate with various internal and external stakeholders, including government agencies, legal counsel, and subject matter experts, to gather necessary information.
- Prepare comprehensive response packages, including redaction of sensitive information in accordance with FOIA regulations and other applicable laws.
- Maintain meticulous records of all requests, communications, and decisions within our case management system.
- Provide expert guidance and consultation on FOIA compliance, best practices, and procedural requirements.
- Stay current with changes in FOIA legislation, regulations, and relevant case law to ensure ongoing compliance.
- Draft correspondence, reports, and other documents related to FOIA requests and appeals.
- Assist in the development and delivery of training materials on FOIA procedures for relevant personnel.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (2+ years) working with Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests or similar public records laws.
- Strong understanding of FOIA exemptions and disclosure requirements.
- Excellent legal research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
- Proficiency in document review and redaction software.
- Ability to work independently and manage a high volume of requests with strict deadlines.
- High level of integrity, discretion, and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Legal Studies, Public Administration, Political Science, or a related field; J.D. or Paralegal Certificate preferred.
- Experience working with government agencies or public sector organizations.
- Familiarity with electronic records management systems.
- Certifications in information governance or privacy (e.g., CIPP/US).
