Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and physically fit Paleontology Hand to join our field team, focusing on agricultural sites in the Great Plains region, specifically operating out of our Pasco, WA base. This entry-level position is crucial for our cultural resource management projects, primarily involving the identification, documentation, and recovery of paleontological resources that may be impacted by agricultural development, land use changes, or other infrastructure projects within rural settings. The Paleontology Hand will work under the direct supervision of a Paleontologist or Field Director, assisting with all aspects of fieldwork from site preparation to artifact curation. This role requires extensive outdoor work in varying weather conditions and may involve manual labor.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with paleontological surveys, pedestrian transects, and shovel testing on agricultural and undeveloped land.
- Participate in the excavation and recovery of fossil remains, using appropriate field techniques and tools.
- Accurately record field data, including site context, stratigraphic information, and GPS coordinates.
- Clean, sort, and catalog recovered fossils in the field and potentially in a lab setting.
- Maintain field equipment and ensure proper care and storage.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and company policies.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding daily progress and any findings.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support project goals.
Required Skills
- Ability to perform strenuous physical activity, including lifting up to 50 lbs, standing, walking, and digging for extended periods.
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.) and challenging terrain.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions.
- Basic understanding of scientific observation and data recording.
- Excellent work ethic and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in archaeological or paleontological fieldwork, even as a volunteer.
- Enrollment in or completion of a degree program in Geology, Paleontology, Anthropology, Archaeology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Familiarity with basic mapping and GPS devices.
- Knowledge of Great Plains regional geology and paleontology.
