Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Google Digital Archivist with a specialized focus on historical data to join our remote team. This role is crucial for preserving, managing, and ensuring the long-term accessibility of Google’s vast and diverse collection of historical digital assets. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in developing and implementing digital preservation strategies, metadata standards, and access policies for historical data, ranging from early product documentation to significant research outputs and cultural artifacts. This is a 100% remote position, offering the flexibility to work from your preferred location while contributing to a globally impactful mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive digital preservation strategies and policies for historical data.
  • Manage the entire lifecycle of digital historical assets, including ingest, description, storage, and access.
  • Apply and enforce metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, PREMIS) to ensure discoverability and long-term usability of historical records.
  • Perform risk assessments and develop mitigation plans for the long-term integrity and authenticity of digital historical data.
  • Collaborate with engineering and product teams to integrate archiving best practices into new and existing platforms.
  • Ensure compliance with legal, ethical, and organizational guidelines for data retention, privacy, and access.
  • Provide expert guidance and training on digital archiving principles and tools to internal stakeholders.
  • Research and evaluate new technologies and methodologies for digital preservation and access.
  • Contribute to the development of tools and systems for managing digital historical collections.
  • Prepare detailed reports on collection status, preservation efforts, and access metrics.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in digital archiving, library science, or information management with a focus on historical data.
  • Strong understanding of digital preservation principles, standards (e.g., OAIS, PREMIS), and best practices.
  • Proficiency with various metadata standards and schema (e.g., Dublin Core, MODS, EAD).
  • Experience with digital asset management systems (DAMS) and/or archival content management systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large-scale digital collections and complex data sets.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Familiarity with data governance, intellectual property rights, and privacy regulations.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace tools and cloud environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, Information Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, R) for data manipulation and automation.
  • Knowledge of various file formats and their preservation challenges.
  • Experience working in a large technology company or a fast-paced corporate environment.
  • Familiarity with distributed ledger technologies or blockchain for data provenance.
  • Certifications in digital archiving or preservation.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional global teams.
