Job Description
This is an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented GIS Mapping Specialist with a passion for paleontology to join our remote team. You will be instrumental in processing, analyzing, and mapping paleontological data using advanced GIS software, supporting various environmental and research projects. This role requires a strong understanding of both geospatial technologies and paleontological principles, contributing to critical scientific and environmental initiatives. This is a 100% remote position, allowing you to work from anywhere.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain comprehensive GIS databases for paleontological sites and findings, ensuring data accuracy and accessibility.
- Process and analyze geological and paleontological spatial data, including fossil localities, stratigraphic units, and environmental contexts.
- Create high-quality maps, figures, and reports to visualize and communicate complex paleontological data and analyses to diverse audiences.
- Utilize remote sensing data, LiDAR, and satellite imagery for site identification, characterization, and impact assessments.
- Collaborate effectively with paleontologists, geologists, environmental scientists, and other project stakeholders on various interdisciplinary projects.
- Ensure data accuracy, integrity, and compliance with industry standards, project requirements, and regulatory guidelines.
- Provide technical support, mentorship, and training for GIS applications and best practices to project teams as needed.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, including experience with geodatabase management.
- Strong understanding of geospatial data management principles, projections, and coordinate systems.
- Demonstrated experience with spatial analysis, geoprocessing tools, and advanced cartography techniques.
- Fundamental knowledge of paleontological data types, methodologies, and fossil identification principles.
- Ability to interpret geological maps, cross-sections, and stratigraphic columns.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and team collaboration.
- Strong problem-solving abilities, analytical thinking, and meticulous attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Geography, Geology, Paleontology, Environmental Science, or a related field with a strong GIS component.
- Experience with Python scripting (ArcPy) for GIS automation and data processing workflows.
- Familiarity with remote sensing software (e.g., ERDAS Imagine, ENVI) or photogrammetry tools.
- Prior experience working on large-scale environmental consulting or academic research projects involving paleontological resources.
- GIS Professional (GISP) certification or equivalent professional credentials.
