Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Geological Field Aide with a strong interest in fossil discovery to join our dynamic research team. This full-time position involves extensive travel across various states to support paleontological expeditions and geological surveys. The successful candidate will assist lead geologists and paleontologists in all aspects of field research, from site preparation and data collection to sample processing and logistics. This is an incredible opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to gain hands-on experience in significant scientific discoveries.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in remote field expeditions for extended periods, assisting with site setup and breakdown.
- Excavate, document, and collect geological and paleontological specimens under supervision.
- Operate and maintain field equipment, including GPS devices, rock hammers, and basic excavation tools.
- Record detailed field notes, photographs, and measurements accurately.
- Process and organize collected samples for transport back to the lab.
- Ensure adherence to all safety protocols and environmental regulations during field operations.
- Assist with basic geological mapping and stratigraphy when required.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment in both field and temporary lab settings.
Required Skills
- Strong physical stamina and ability to work in challenging outdoor environments and varied weather conditions.
- Excellent attention to detail and meticulous record-keeping skills.
- Ability to follow instructions precisely and work effectively as part of a team.
- Basic understanding of geological principles and/or an interest in paleontology.
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate 4×4 vehicles.
- Proficiency with basic hand tools for excavation and sample collection.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or current enrollment in Geology, Paleontology, Earth Sciences, or a related field.
- Prior experience in field research, archaeology, or outdoor expeditions.
- Knowledge of GPS and mapping software.
- Wilderness First Aid or other relevant safety certifications.
- Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
