Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Fossil Science Assistant to join our esteemed Paleontology Department. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual passionate about fossil research and scientific preservation. The Fossil Science Assistant will provide crucial support to our paleontologists and collections managers, assisting with specimen preparation, curation, data management, and fieldwork. This role requires precision, an eagerness to learn, and a commitment to scientific integrity, contributing directly to significant discoveries and the long-term stewardship of our invaluable fossil collections. You will work closely with leading experts in a dynamic, research-focused environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist paleontologists and collections staff with the preparation, stabilization, and conservation of fossil specimens, including microfossil sorting and macrofossil cleaning.
- Perform meticulous data entry and maintain accurate records of fossil specimens, locations, and associated research data using museum collection databases.
- Support fieldwork logistics, including preparing equipment, organizing supplies, and participating in field excavations as needed.
- Conduct preliminary identification and sorting of fossil material under supervision.
- Assist with the organization and inventory of the fossil collections, ensuring proper storage and accessibility.
- Operate and maintain basic laboratory equipment and tools used in fossil preparation and analysis.
- Prepare summaries and basic reports on research activities and specimen status.
- Adhere strictly to all health, safety, and ethical guidelines for working with natural history collections and in the field.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Biology, Anthropology, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in fossil preparation, curation, or related laboratory work (academic or professional).
- Proficiency with scientific data entry and database management systems.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Physical ability to perform fieldwork, including lifting moderate weights and working in varying environmental conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
- Experience with GIS software for mapping fossil localities.
- Familiarity with museum collection management software (e.g., Specify, EMu).
- Knowledge of California's paleontological history and fossil sites.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
