Job Description
Are you passionate about natural history, geology, and the thrill of discovery? Wake Forest University’s Department of Geology is seeking enthusiastic and resilient individuals to join our team as a Fossil Prospector for a seasonal outdoor field expedition. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to significant paleontological research, working directly in fossil-rich environments. You will be instrumental in the discovery, careful excavation, and preliminary cataloging of ancient fossil specimens. This is a hands-on, physically demanding position that requires a love for the outdoors, an adventurous spirit, and meticulous attention to detail. A travel stipend will be provided to cover expedition-related expenses.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct field surveys and systematic searches for fossil specimens in designated geological formations.
- Perform careful excavation of discovered fossils using appropriate tools and techniques to prevent damage.
- Document findings thoroughly, including photographic records, GPS coordinates, and geological context.
- Assist with the preparation of fossils for transport and preliminary field conservation.
- Maintain accurate field notes and data logs according_to research protocols.
- Adhere to all safety guidelines and environmental regulations during field operations.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and lead paleontologists.
- Contribute to camp setup and maintenance in remote field locations.
Required Skills
- Ability to perform strenuous physical activity for extended periods in varying outdoor conditions (e.g., hiking, lifting, digging).
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
- Willingness to work in remote locations for weeks at a time.
- Basic knowledge of geology or natural history.
- Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
- Proficiency with basic hand tools and field equipment.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in paleontological, archaeological, or geological field work.
- Familiarity with fossil identification and stratigraphic principles.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Experience with GPS devices and mapping software.
- Degree or coursework in Geology, Biology, Paleontology, Anthropology, or related fields.
