Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Food Chemist with a specialized focus on Nutritional Analysis to join our R&D and Quality Assurance team in Santa Maria, CA. This is an immediate hire position for a professional passionate about food science and ensuring the highest standards of product quality and nutritional integrity. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting precise analytical testing, developing new methodologies, and interpreting complex data related to the nutritional composition of our diverse range of food ingredients. You will play a crucial role in product development, regulatory compliance, and consumer information.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive nutritional analysis on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished food ingredients using various analytical techniques (e.g., HPLC, GC, spectrophotometry, titration).
- Develop, validate, and optimize analytical methods for nutrient quantification, including vitamins, minerals, fats, proteins, carbohydrates, and fiber.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring proper calibration and adherence to GLP/GMP standards.
- Interpret complex analytical data, prepare detailed reports, and present findings to R&D, Quality Assurance, and regulatory teams.
- Collaborate with product development scientists to ensure nutritional targets are met and to support new product formulations.
- Ensure all testing procedures and results comply with relevant food safety regulations (e.g., FDA, USDA) and internal quality standards.
- Participate in root cause analysis for out-of-specification results and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of all experimental procedures, results, and analyses.
- Stay current with advancements in food chemistry, nutritional analysis techniques, and regulatory requirements.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related scientific field.
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in a food chemistry laboratory, specifically with nutritional analysis.
- Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting analytical instruments such as HPLC, GC, ICP-OES, and spectrophotometers.
- Strong understanding of food composition, nutrient interactions, and degradation pathways.
- Knowledge of relevant food safety regulations and quality standards (e.g., FDA, USDA, ISO).
- Excellent data analysis, interpretation, and technical report writing skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in a relevant scientific discipline.
- Experience with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) software.
- Familiarity with method validation protocols (e.g., AOAC, USP).
- Experience in a fast-paced manufacturing or R&D environment within the food industry.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement new analytical methods.
