Job Description

The Florida Museum of Natural History invites applications for a College Student Research Fellow with a focus on Paleontology. This unique fellowship offers an immersive, hands-on experience for an enthusiastic college student eager to delve into paleontological research. Based at our New Port Richey Research Annex, the Fellow will work directly with paleontologists on ongoing projects involving fossil preparation, identification, curation, and data analysis. This is an exceptional opportunity to gain practical laboratory and collection management skills, contribute to scientific discovery, and explore potential career paths in museum science, academia, or conservation. The fellowship aims to provide comprehensive training in paleontological methodologies and foster a deep understanding of Florida’s prehistoric life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior paleontologists with the preparation, cleaning, and conservation of fossil specimens.
  • Contribute to the identification and cataloging of new and existing fossil collections.
  • Perform data entry and manage specimen records using museum collection databases.
  • Conduct literature reviews to support ongoing research projects.
  • Participate in fieldwork as opportunities arise, assisting with fossil excavation and recovery.
  • Learn and apply proper handling and storage techniques for paleontological specimens.
  • Prepare basic reports and presentations on research findings for internal review.
  • Maintain a clean and organized laboratory workspace.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in Geology, Biology, Paleontology, Anthropology, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in paleontology, evolutionary biology, or earth sciences.
  • Excellent attention to detail and manual dexterity for specimen handling.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a research team.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a laboratory or museum setting (volunteer or coursework).
  • Familiarity with geological mapping or GIS software.
  • Experience with microscopy or other scientific instrumentation.
  • Coursework in systematics, comparative anatomy, or taphonomy.
