Job Description

Coe College invites applications for a College Student Research Fellow with a dedicated focus on Paleontology. This unique fellowship provides an unparalleled opportunity for an enthusiastic undergraduate student to immerse themselves in practical paleontological research. Working directly under the guidance of experienced faculty mentors, the successful candidate will contribute significantly to ongoing projects involving the identification, preparation, and detailed analysis of fossil specimens. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist faculty researchers with all phases of fossil preparation, including meticulous cleaning, careful repair, and stabilization techniques.
  • Accurately identify, classify, and catalog fossil specimens according to established protocols.
  • Conduct comprehensive literature reviews to provide foundational support for current and upcoming research projects.
  • Aid in the collection, precise entry, and preliminary analysis of research data.
  • Participate in organized field excursions for fossil collection, when opportunities arise and conditions permit.
  • Maintain rigorous and detailed records of all research activities, methodologies, and findings.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on research findings at internal departmental seminars or college-wide academic events.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student in a relevant scientific discipline such as geology, biology, environmental science, anthropology, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated genuine interest and foundational knowledge in paleontology or earth sciences.
  • Possess strong attention to detail and exceptional organizational abilities.
  • Capable of meticulously following instructions and adept at working both independently and collaboratively within a research team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for documenting research and engaging in scientific discourse.
  • Basic proficiency in common computer applications, including the Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous academic coursework specifically in paleontology, geology, or evolutionary biology.
  • Prior experience with microscopy techniques or scientific illustration.
  • Familiarity with museum collection management practices or similar archival systems.
  • Some level of prior laboratory or field research experience.
