Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Coastal Paleontology Sorter with a specific focus on marine fossils to join our Natural History Collections team. This role is crucial for the preliminary processing, sorting, and organization of newly acquired and existing fossil specimens, primarily from coastal and marine environments. The successful candidate will play a vital role in preparing specimens for further study and exhibition, contributing directly to our understanding of ancient marine ecosystems.
Key Responsibilities
- Carefully sort raw fossil samples from geological matrices, identifying and separating marine fossil specimens.
- Perform preliminary cleaning and basic preparation of fossil specimens using appropriate tools and techniques.
- Accurately catalog and label specimens with unique identifiers, location data, and preliminary taxonomic information.
- Maintain detailed records of sorted materials, including quantity, condition, and any observed anomalies.
- Assist with the organization and shelving of prepared specimens within the museum's collections storage facilities.
- Follow established safety protocols and conservation guidelines for handling fragile and valuable specimens.
- Collaborate with paleontologists and collections managers on specific projects and specimen identification.
- Contribute to the upkeep and maintenance of the paleontology lab and sorting areas.
Required Skills
- Exceptional attention to detail and precision in handling small and delicate objects.
- Basic understanding of geological principles and fossil formation.
- Familiarity with various types of marine fossils (e.g., shells, teeth, bone fragments, trace fossils).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a focused, methodical manner.
- Proficiency in data entry and basic computer skills (e.g., spreadsheets, database entry).
- Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate records.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Biology, Anthropology, or a related field.
- Previous experience working with natural history collections, particularly in a museum or research lab setting.
- Demonstrated experience in fossil preparation or sorting.
- Knowledge of regional (Arkansas/Gulf Coast) paleontology and geology.
- Experience with collection management software.
