Job Description
Are you eager to start a career in the automotive industry and learn valuable body shop skills? Gerber Collision & Glass in Topeka, Kansas, is seeking a motivated Car Paint Prep Trainee to join our dynamic team. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals with little to no prior experience who are ready to learn the fundamentals of vehicle paint preparation, a crucial step in delivering high-quality auto body repairs. You will work alongside experienced technicians, gaining hands-on training in sanding, masking, cleaning, and preparing vehicles for painting, setting the foundation for a successful career as a paint technician.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior paint technicians with preparing vehicles for paint application.
- Clean, degrease, and sand vehicle surfaces to ensure proper adhesion of paint.
- Mask and tape off areas not intended for painting, including windows, trim, and chrome.
- Mix and prepare primers, sealers, and other materials under supervision.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring tools and equipment are properly stored.
- Inspect prepared surfaces for imperfections and report findings to senior technicians.
- Follow all safety guidelines and procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Commit to continuous learning and skill development through on-the-job training.
- Perform general shop duties as assigned.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong work ethic and a desire to learn new skills.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team environment.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to quality workmanship.
- Physical ability to stand, bend, stoop, lift up to 50 lbs, and work with hands for extended periods.
- Reliable transportation to and from our Topeka facility.
Preferred Qualifications
- Basic understanding of automotive repair or mechanics.
- Previous experience in a hands-on role or trade.
- Vocational training or coursework in automotive repair.
