Job Description

Are you eager to start a career in the automotive industry and learn valuable body shop skills? Gerber Collision & Glass in Topeka, Kansas, is seeking a motivated Car Paint Prep Trainee to join our dynamic team. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals with little to no prior experience who are ready to learn the fundamentals of vehicle paint preparation, a crucial step in delivering high-quality auto body repairs. You will work alongside experienced technicians, gaining hands-on training in sanding, masking, cleaning, and preparing vehicles for painting, setting the foundation for a successful career as a paint technician.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior paint technicians with preparing vehicles for paint application.
  • Clean, degrease, and sand vehicle surfaces to ensure proper adhesion of paint.
  • Mask and tape off areas not intended for painting, including windows, trim, and chrome.
  • Mix and prepare primers, sealers, and other materials under supervision.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring tools and equipment are properly stored.
  • Inspect prepared surfaces for imperfections and report findings to senior technicians.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Commit to continuous learning and skill development through on-the-job training.
  • Perform general shop duties as assigned.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong work ethic and a desire to learn new skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Physical ability to stand, bend, stoop, lift up to 50 lbs, and work with hands for extended periods.
  • Reliable transportation to and from our Topeka facility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of automotive repair or mechanics.
  • Previous experience in a hands-on role or trade.
  • Vocational training or coursework in automotive repair.
