Job Description
Are you passionate about animal welfare and eager to make a tangible impact? Guide Dogs is offering an exciting Canine Service Dog Training Intern position based in our Pimlico facility in London. This entry-level internship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the specialized field of service dog training. You will work alongside experienced trainers, learning the methodologies, techniques, and dedication required to prepare dogs for their vital roles. This internship is ideal for individuals seeking to build a career in animal behavior, training, or support services for people with disabilities. You will contribute to the daily care, enrichment, and training of our future service dogs, helping them develop the skills and confidence needed to become companions for individuals with sight loss. This is a full-time, on-site role that requires commitment, empathy, and a strong work ethic. While previous professional experience is not required, a genuine love for animals and a proactive attitude are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior trainers in daily training sessions for service dogs.
- Participate in dog enrichment activities, including walks, play, and socialization.
- Learn and apply positive reinforcement training techniques.
- Maintain accurate records of dog progress, behavior, and health observations.
- Ensure the cleanliness and welfare of the training facility and dog kennels.
- Support in preparing dogs for public access and advanced training modules.
- Observe and learn about the matching process between dogs and recipients.
- Provide basic care, feeding, and grooming for dogs under supervision.
- Adhere to all safety and animal welfare protocols and guidelines.
- Contribute to a positive and supportive team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

- Previous volunteer experience with animals, particularly dogs.
- Knowledge of basic dog behavior and body language.
- First Aid for animals certification.
