Job Description

The Royal Observatory Greenwich is seeking a passionate and skilled Astronomer to join our team. This role involves both public engagement and research activities, contributing to our mission of sharing the wonders of astronomy with a broad audience while also conducting independent scientific work. You will be responsible for maintaining astronomical instruments, supporting educational programs, and pursuing research projects aligned with the observatory’s goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain telescopes and astronomical equipment.
  • Deliver engaging presentations, workshops, and planetarium shows to diverse audiences.
  • Conduct independent research in astronomy or astrophysics.
  • Analyze astronomical data and publish findings in scientific literature.
  • Contribute to the development of new educational and public outreach programs.
  • Assist with the care and interpretation of the observatory's historic collections.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external researchers.
  • Support grant applications and funding initiatives.

Required Skills

  • PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in observational astronomy and telescope operation.
  • Strong ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to non-specialist audiences.
  • Proficiency in astronomical data analysis software (e.g., Python, IRAF).
  • A track record of scientific publication or public engagement initiatives.
  • Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a museum, observatory, or planetarium setting.
  • Previous experience with science communication or education.
  • Familiarity with historic astronomical instruments.
  • Project management experience in a research or public engagement context.
  • Knowledge of astronomical imaging and spectroscopy techniques.
