Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Paleo Support specialist to join our civilian team in Pueblo, Colorado. This critical role involves supporting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ mission by conducting paleontological surveys, evaluations, and mitigation activities in compliance with federal regulations such as the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the Paleontological Resources Preservation Act (PRPA), and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The successful candidate will contribute to environmental planning and resource management by identifying, documenting, and protecting significant paleontological resources across various project sites. This position offers an opportunity to apply scientific expertise in a government service context, working on projects with national importance.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct paleontological field surveys, including pedestrian surveys, surface collection, and excavation oversight.
- Identify, document, and record paleontological resources using standardized methodologies.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, site forms, and management plans.
- Analyze collected data and specimens, contributing to resource evaluations and impact assessments.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to paleontological resource management.
- Collaborate with project managers, environmental specialists, and other stakeholders.
- Provide technical assistance and recommendations on paleontological issues.
- Assist in developing and implementing mitigation strategies for identified resources.
Required Skills
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, or a closely related field.
- 3-5 years of professional experience in paleontological fieldwork and resource management.
- Demonstrated knowledge of federal cultural and paleontological resource laws and regulations (e.g., NHPA, PRPA, NEPA).
- Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) for mapping and data management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing and presentations.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Physical ability to conduct extensive fieldwork in varied terrain and weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Paleontology or a related field.
- Experience working on U.S. federal projects or for a government agency.
- Certification in specialized paleontological techniques or safety training.
- Experience with fossil preparation and curation.
- Knowledge of the paleontological resources specific to the Western United States.
