Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and intellectually curious Applied Math & Cryptography Intern to join our advanced research team in Provo, Utah. This internship offers a unique opportunity to apply your mathematical prowess to real-world cryptographic challenges within a leading aerospace and defense company. You will work alongside experienced engineers and researchers, contributing to the development and analysis of secure communication protocols, cryptographic algorithms, and quantum-resistant solutions. This is an ideal role for students passionate about deep mathematical theory and its practical application in cybersecurity and secure systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research into advanced mathematical concepts relevant to modern cryptography, including number theory, abstract algebra, and computational complexity.
  • Assist in the design, analysis, and implementation of cryptographic algorithms and protocols.
  • Develop mathematical models and simulations to evaluate the security and performance of cryptographic systems.
  • Contribute to internal research papers, technical reports, and presentations.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and scientists on various projects related to secure communications and data protection.
  • Participate in code reviews and testing of cryptographic implementations.

Required Skills

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Strong foundational knowledge in abstract algebra, number theory, and discrete mathematics.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C++, Java) for prototyping and analysis.
  • Basic understanding of cryptographic primitives and concepts (e.g., symmetric/asymmetric encryption, hash functions, digital signatures).
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate complex ideas clearly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous coursework or projects in cryptography, information theory, or coding theory.
  • Experience with cryptographic libraries (e.g., OpenSSL, Bouncy Castle) or tools.
  • Familiarity with quantum computing principles and post-quantum cryptography.
  • Experience with scientific computing environments (e.g., MATLAB, SageMath).
  • Active security clearances or ability to obtain one.
