Job Description

As a Pinterest Digital Archivist with a focus on Historical Data at Google, you will be instrumental in developing and executing strategies for the long-term preservation, management, and accessibility of vast and complex digital datasets, with particular attention to historical data from visual content platforms. This specialized role requires a deep understanding of archival science, advanced data management techniques, and familiarity with cloud-native architectures. You will lead efforts in identifying, acquiring, describing, and safeguarding digital records, ensuring their authenticity, integrity, and future usability for research, analytics, and compliance purposes. Your work will directly contribute to protecting digital heritage and enabling novel insights from historical trends.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement scalable digital archiving workflows for historical datasets, including ingestion, metadata creation, storage, and retrieval mechanisms.
  • Manage the entire lifecycle of digital assets within Google Cloud Platform (GCP), ensuring secure storage, data integrity, and long-term preservation.
  • Collaborate closely with product, engineering, legal, and privacy teams to define data retention policies and ensure compliance with global regulations.
  • Develop and enforce robust metadata standards, controlled vocabularies, and ontologies to optimize discoverability and context for archived content.
  • Conduct regular audits, integrity checks, and risk assessments of digital archives to ensure data authenticity and mitigate preservation challenges.
  • Provide expert guidance and training on digital preservation best practices to internal stakeholders.
  • Evaluate and recommend cutting-edge technologies and methodologies for enhancing digital archival capabilities.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, Information Science, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in digital archiving, data preservation, or records management, particularly with large-scale digital collections.
  • In-depth knowledge of archival theory, digital preservation standards (e.g., OAIS, PREMIS), and best practices.
  • Proficiency in designing and applying metadata schemas (e.g., Dublin Core, EAD, MODS) for complex digital assets.
  • Experience with cloud storage solutions, preferably Google Cloud Storage or similar.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience specifically with visual content platforms, social media archives, or time-series data.
  • Familiarity with data governance frameworks, privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), and electronic discovery processes.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python, SQL) for data manipulation, automation, and reporting.
  • Experience with digital forensics tools or techniques for ensuring data authenticity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving technical environment.
