Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Instrument Repair Specialist with a primary focus on woodwind and brass instruments to join our team in Fremont, Seattle. This role is crucial in ensuring that our customers’ instruments are maintained to the highest standards, enabling musicians to perform at their best. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of instrument mechanics, a keen eye for detail, and a passion for craftsmanship. You will be responsible for diagnosing issues, performing repairs, adjustments, and general maintenance on a wide variety of woodwind and brass instruments, from student models to professional-grade equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform diagnostic assessments and estimates for woodwind and brass instrument repairs.
- Execute comprehensive repairs, adjustments, cleaning, and maintenance on a diverse range of instruments (e.g., flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, tubas).
- Replace pads, corks, springs, and other components as needed.
- Solder, braze, and reshape metal components, particularly for brass instruments.
- Adjust key heights, alignments, and spring tensions to ensure optimal playability.
- Provide excellent customer service, clearly explaining repair options and timelines.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace.
- Order and manage parts inventory, ensuring availability for common repairs.
- Continuously learn and adapt to new repair techniques and instrument technologies.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in repairing woodwind and brass musical instruments.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.
- Detailed knowledge of woodwind and brass instrument construction and function.
- Proficiency with specialized repair tools and equipment.
- Ability to diagnose complex instrument issues accurately.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification from a recognized musical instrument repair program or equivalent apprenticeship.
- Experience with specialty instruments (e.g., oboe, bassoon, French horn).
- Familiarity with various instrument brands and models.
- Experience in customer service within a retail or service environment.
- Ability to play a woodwind or brass instrument (beneficial but not required).
